Let’s face it, managing a web site can be an organizational nightmare. You find that you eventually have about 50 passwords to remember, various search engines to check for your latest ranking, reciprocal links to check, and other repetitive tasks related to web site optimization…

My philosophy is to do whatever I can to automate and simplify my daily tasks related to managing my various web sites. This gives me time to focus on what I like best — researching my topic and providing straight forward information.

To automate the building and maintenance of web sites I use Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Both, if you spend some time learning them will save you hours upon hours of time. Everyone seems to have their favorite web design programs but I am extremely happy with the Macromedia product line.

Here are some other items I use on a daily basis that help increase my everyday productivity.

  • Password tracking - You will find that you as you sign up with different services and memberships related to web site optimization you accumulate several passwords and logins. For example, it can become time consuming to check your various pay-per-click accounts. First you have to go to the login page, type in the password then click to get on to the correct page.I have discovered a neat little program called Roboform that makes this a snap. It remembers your logins and with one click will put you in your passworded sites. It will help you autofill web forms with one click. I suggest you try the program with their 30 day trial. If you don’t think it makes you more productive, remove it.
  • If you are short on time and need a helping hand there are two great software programs to help automate your site optimization process that deserve mention.
    1. The first program is SEO Elite, which automates various link management processes related to web site optimization. Optilink will analyze your top competitors linking structure and then offer tips to improve your site’s link structure.Optilink will also check reciprocal links to make sure your link partners are maintaining their links to your site.
    2. Another great program is SEO Studio. This search engine optimization program does everything from search engine submits and keyword ranking checks to web page optimization.This program is actually so powerful that you should limit its use to an “as needed” basis. For example, the search engines don’t like when you use the program to check your rankings on 50 key phases 5 times in a day or auto submit your page on a daily basis.The program is a great tool, you just need to use a little common sense when using it for your web site optimization process.
